Buzzards Bay Golf Tournament to clean up New Bedford Harbor
The Buzzards Bay Coalition is partnering with the Bay Club at Mattapoisett to host a golf tournament on May 22 to fund nitrogen pollution cleanup in New Bedford Harbor.
Registration is open from now until May 14 and will cost $250 per person to participate in the tournament, and $30 for reception only tickets.
The tournament, which will be held at the Bay Club's parkland style 7,100 yard championship course, uses a "best ball of foursome" format so that golfers of all abilities can participate.
All proceeds from the fundraiser will go to support projects that clean up nitrogen pollution in New Bedford Harbor.
“This event is unique because the proceeds go directly to new technologies and projects that will improve water quality in New Bedford Harbor,” said Bay Coalition Vice-President of Operations Maureen Coleman in a prepared statement.
“It’s a simple equation: Your round of golf on this fantastic course means cleaner water in New Bedford Harbor.”
A tournament prize give-away and a live and silent auction will be held at the conclusion of play and presided over by State Senator Mark Montigny.
The auction will feature experiences such as a guided salmon-fishing adventure in Alaska with Angling Unlimited, a weeklong luxury resort stay in St. Lucia in the Caribbean, a week-long stay at a 15th-century cottage in Sussex England, a yacht cruise and clambake on Cuttyhunk Island in the Vineyard Sound custom-fitted Titleist Metal Wood golf clubs, golf foursomes, art, jewelry, and collectibles, and an array of specially designed Buzzards Bay experiences.
A raffle will give away Red Sox tickets and a Caribbean getaway to Antigua. Golfers will also win prizes for lowest score, longest drive, and closet to the pin.
The New Bedford Harbor has suffered from toxic and sewer pollution for decades and is now also suffocating from nitrogen pollution.
The Bay Coalition already does significant work to clean up the Harbor including monitoring water quality, protecting and restoring sensitive coastal lands, educating the community, and serving as a watchdog against all types of pollution.
The Coalition hopes that the biggest prize from the golf tournament will be clean water in New Bedford.
