Buzzards Play Productions hopes 'Hospital' will leave audience in stitches

Dec 4, 2011

If laughter is the best medicine, then "Hospital," the latest community theatre production to be performed at Buzzards Play Productions, is just what the doctor ordered.

The Marx Brothers-style comedy by Tim Kelly follows the crazy antics at a hospital that is in danger of being shut down. It features an ensemble cast of middle school actors from several communities on the South Coast, including Wareham.

Director Christina Piscitelli, a Wareham resident, said she loves directing middle school actors.

"They're my favorite age to work with," she said, adding that she liked them because she could still "reach them" as a director, something that's tougher to do with high school or adult actors.

Many of the young actors, like Wareham residents Isabella and Blossom Roberge, attend the Waldorf School of Cape Cod, a private school located in Cotuit.

Piscitelli, who is putting on the play as part of her newly-formed Tina Telli Production company in conjunction with Buzzards Play Productions, said she picked the play because she loves to make people laugh.

"Laughter is the fruit of the soul," she said.

Emma Crockford, a sixth grader at the Waldorf School of Cape Cod who plays the villain of the production, said comedy is harder than drama to perform.

"You have to say it in a certain way so the audience gets it," Crockford said.

Gus Most, an eighth grader at the Waldorf School, said Piscitelli is teaching them that comedy is "all in the timing," and if they don't give their lines properly, then the jokes will fall flat.

Kiah Heron, an eighth grader at Wareham Middle School, said she is excited to act in "Hospital" because it's the first play she's done that hasn't been a musical, which she says are harder because of the choreographed numbers.

Heron, who plays one of the interns at the hospital, said it's fun to be in plays with actors her own age, because they can relate to each other better.

Piscitelli said she thinks the all-youth cast is great experience for the kids.

"They've just made new friends," she said.

"Hospital" will be performed Friday, Dec. 9 at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 10 at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday, Dec. 11 at noon at Buzzards Play Productions, located at 3065 Cranberry Highway in East Wareham. Tickets are $7 at the door or $5 in advance by calling 508-295-5480.
