Cabaret comes to Wareham to benefit Summer of Celebration

Sep 15, 2013

The cabaret came to town to raise money for the 2014 Summer of Celebration.

Onset resident Linda Calise brought fellow performer Hank Stampfl from New York City to perform with her in a colorful show that constantly engaged the audience with feather boas… and some super-close dancing.

"Linda Calise is bringing Broadway back to Onset," said Winna Dean, a member of the Summer of Celebration Steering Committee.

During the Summer of Celebration in 2014, Wareham will be celebrating its 275th birthday and recognizing 200th anniversary of the attack on the town by the British warship, the HMS Nimrod.

The show tunes mixed with pop tunes and witty banter between Calise and Stampfl had the crowd dancing both on the sidelines and with the performers.

Caslise and Stampfl perform together in the New York based company Speakeasy Moderne, where Stampfl does double duty as producer and host.

Of the show in Onset, Calise says, "I've kind of put together a little production of my own, now we've partnered," adding that she and Stampfl complement each other well.

Stampfl says he is hoping to bring a taste of Speakeasy Moderne to Onset next summer, and has been checking out performances places around town.

Steering Committee member Claire Smith says that there are plenty of events planned during the days long celebration in 2014, including historical demonstrations and encampments.

"Once we figure out what we have for funding, we'll say 'yes you can' or 'no you can't'" to the various groups anticipated to be participating in the celebration, Smith said.
