Cape Cod League hopefuls tryout at Spillane Field
College baseball players from all over New England descended on Spillane Field Saturday to show their skills, hoping to land one of the final roster spots on one of the ten Cape Cod League baseball teams this summer.
Coaches and scouts kept a close eye on players at the annual Frank Finn Cape League invitational tryout looking for the final piece to complete their team before the season starts in early June.
Invited to this year's tryout were 74 student-athletes from 46 different schools nationwide. Of the 74, 48 of those invited were positional players while the remaining 26 were pitchers.
Four pitchers were signed after the tryout, one of whom went to the Gatemen. The team signed Jason Harper, a sophomore at Franklin Pierce University in New Hampshire, originally from Saugus, Mass. The right-handed Harper threw one inning at the tryout striking out three batters and allowing no hits.
Harper, who did not appear in the 2014 season for Franklin Pierce, was named the Boston Globe player of the year as well as a Boston Globe all-scholastic selection in his senior year at Northeast Metro Tech High School.
The Gatemen play their first preseason game on Sunday, June 8 against Newport of the New England Collegiate Baseball League.
The Gatemen will look to return to their 2012 championship form when they start start the Cape Cod league regular season on Wednesday, June 11 at Bourne. The first home game at Spillane field will be against Harwich at 7 p.m. on Saturday, June 14.
