As the first major hurricane of the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season, Hurricane Erin swept through the Cape Verde Islands killing at least seven people on the island of São Vicente.

The Dudley Brown VFW in Onset is accepting donations to aid the islands after the devastating storm. 

The VFW is in need of canned goods, rice, dried beans and nonperishable food items to send to the islands. Donations will be accepted up to Friday, Sept. 5.
