Cape Verdean Fest celebrates 550 years of heritage

Aug 14, 2010

There was music, dancing, crafts, food, and most importantly, many happy reunions at the 2010 Cape Verdean Festival last Saturday in Onset.

"There are lots of people, good weather, it's like a huge family reunion," said Volunteer Larry Senna.  "You couldn't ask for more."

An estimated 20,000 people from all over the United States converged on Onset on what turned out to be a perfect summer day - hot enough for a day at the beach but with an offshore breeze that kept the crowds lining the Onset Bluffs cool.

This year was extra special because it celebrated the 35th anniversary of the independence of the Republic of Cape Verde and the 550th anniversary of the discovery of the Cape Verde Islands.

Twenty-two food vendors offered refreshment including traditional Cape Verdean dishes such as manchupa, a corn and bean soup with kale and ham, as well as standard festival fare.

Seventy-eight other vendors provided everything from handmade soaps and fine arts that depicted the Cape Verde Islands, to underwear,  kitchen supplies, and modular homes.

"They're all smiling, so they must be doing well," said Volunteer Winna Dean, who arrived at 6 a.m. to help the vendors set up.

There was a lot of smiling going on at the festival... and a lot of hugs as families and friends greeted each other.

Drew Barboza, of Waterbury, CT, traveled with 30 other members of his town's Cape Verdean community.

"Every year it gets bigger," Barboza said.

And by the time that the Mendes Brothers came onstage for their set, the celebration had reached its peak.

"This is a celebration of 550 years of culture, tradition, and beautiful people...who overcame hardship with love," said lead singer Joao Mendes just before the opening chords rang out and the dancing began.
