Carl P. Gomes, 77, of Wareham, died April 14, at home while surrounded by his family. He was the husband of Barbara A. (Clark) Gomes and the son of the late Peter Gomes, Jr. and Angelina (Andrade) Gomes.

He was born in Wareham and lived there all of his life.

Mr. Gomes worked in the construction field for many years before retiring.

He was a professional boxer and trained many local boxers. Carl loved his family, boxing, baseball, the Red Sox, the Patriots, and going to the gym. He walked 3 to 4 miles per day.

Survivors include his widow, Barbara A. (Clark) Gomes; his children, Carl Gomes of Worcester, Lenora Gomes of Wareham, Chris Gomes and his wife Michelle of Dartmouth, Carla Spofford and her husband James of Northbridge, Shane Gomes of Buzzards Bay; a stepson, Jason Cromwell and his wife Katie Ewan of Wareham; his brothers, Phillip Gomes of Plymouth, Maurice Gomes of Hampton, VA, Roger Gomes and Peter Gomes both of Boston, Benjamin Gomes of Wareham, Ronald Gomes of Onset, Antone Gomes of Wareham, Alan Gomes of Jacksonville, FL, Mark “Tiny” Silva of Wareham and Donald Gomes of Wareham; his sister, Christine Andrews of Wareham; 16 grandchildren; a great-granddaughter, Kaiya Fernandez; 3 step-grandchildren, Jason, Mia and Olivia Cromwell; 3 godchildren, Kim Gomes, Dean Martin, and Vanessa Lopes all of Wareham; his aunts, Frances Fortes of New Bedford and FL and Dominga Andrade of Falmouth; many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was the brother of the late Manuel Gomes, Eugene Gomes and David Johnson.

His funeral will be held at 9 a.m. on Thursday, April 18, from the Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home, 2599 Cranberry Hwy., Wareham, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at St. Patrick’s Church, 82 High Street, Wareham. Burial will follow in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Wareham.

Visiting hours are from 4 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home.
