Cat rescued from two-alarm Atlantic Avenue fire

Apr 23, 2023

A man and his cat escaped unharmed from a two-alarm house fire at 1717 Atlantic Ave. in the early morning hours of Sunday, April 23.

Firefighters received a call shortly after midnight from the home’s owner, who managed to evacuate the house safely but whose cat was still inside.

Firefighters rescued the cat, who also suffered no injuries, and spent an hour putting out the rapidly-spreading fire.

Assistant Fire Chief Patrick Haskell said that the fire, aided by strong winds, caused “extensive damage” to the basement and first floor of the house.

Haskell could not say whether the man was the home’s sole occupant, or if there were others not present at the time of the fire.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, but does not appear suspicious.
