Characters come out for story time

Story time at the Wareham Free Library had some unusual guests Thursday, with a variety of characters and creatures gathering to listen to Halloween stories.

Six-year-old Graydon "Dega" Parr took over Spiderman's duties for the day, giving his usual alter ego Peter Parker the day off.

"I love Spiderman," he said of the superhero.

Raegan Duarte, a six-year-old regular at story time, came dressed as a panda - but not just any panda - this panda had a tutu and was ready to dance!

"I like them," Duarte said of pandas. "They're fuzzy."

Children's Librarian Marcia Hickey said that the yearly event begins in the children's room, and the kids parade around the library to stops that include stories and treats.

"We do different things every year," she said, noting that last year they had a cadre of teenage volunteers, and were able to bring the event outside.

The event was inside this year, but the candy and stories were just as good as last year.

"As they read the pages they get a treat," Hickey explained. "It's just a different way to read."

As Hickey read aloud to the group, they chimed in occasionally, while Hickey read stories like "If You're a Monster and You Know It."

It may have been a little early for trick-or-treating, but a building full of books is a great place to get into character before the evening candy stroll.
