Charles Maxim, 89

Charles H. Maxim, 89, of Wareham, passed away peacefully, Feb. 8 at Tobey Hospital. He was preceded by his wife Marie (Wallace) Maxim and his former wife, Eleanor Harding.

Born and raised in Wareham, he was the son of the late Howard and Maria (Tosi) Maxim.

Following in this father’s footsteps he was employed by the Town of Wareham, Municipal Maintenance Department as a general foreman and heavy equipment operator.

He was a World War II veteran, serving in the U.S. Navy, as a submarine tender.

Charlie was known by many as a legend, as his passion and knowledge of hunting, fishing and the town, lent for countless stories for many far and wide. He served as Herring Commissioner, Deputy Shellfish Officer and operated acres of shellfish grants, passed down from his father, which lead him to his strong conviction to preservation. He served as an Onset Water Commissioner, was a member of the Onset Fire Department as well as the Wareham Forestry Department and was deputized as a special police officer.

Charlie was a long-standing member of the Red Cedar Fox Club, Wankinquoah Rod and Gun Club, Improved Order of Redmen, and member of the Onset Box 5.

He is survived by his sons, Robert Maxim of Sandwich, Michael Maxim of Bourne and daughter Marie Ferreira of Wareham; his grand-daughters Heidi Mello and husband Jason of Maryland, Cynthia Whitney of Wareham, Jill Nasuti, of Rhode Island, Kallie Maxim of Bourne, and grandsons Christopher Whitney and wife Nicole, of East Freetown, Michael Maxim of Pocasset, Robert, Ryan, Reed Maxim of Sandwich, nine great-grandchildren and 22 nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late, Frances Lewis, Margaret Stec, Evelyn Mallowes and Nancy Connolly. He is survived by his brother Raymond Maxim and wife Cindy of Florida, sisters Joann Osborne of New Hampshire, Dorothy DeBlois of Wareham, and Barbara DeMello of North Carolina. He also, leaves his friend Reatha Charette.

His funeral Mass will be held on Feb. 16 St. Patrick’s Church Parish Hall, High Street, Wareham at 10 a.m. Interment will be private. A Celebration of Life will follow at the Wankinquoah Rod and Gun Club, 92 Pine St., Middleboro.
