Cheerleaders aim to soar into first place at national competition
With the national competition set to begin in a little over a week, cheerleaders from the Wareham Tigers Cheer Athletics are looking to tumble by the competition and soar into first place.
The national competition is being held at Disney World in Orlando March 7 and 8. The competition, called The Quest Recreational Cheer Championship, is where the best recreational cheerleaders from across the country meet to see who is the best.
In order to earn a spot in the competition, teams must earn a "bid" during their competition season. He added there are two kinds of bids, paid bids and non-paid bids.
There are three levels of paid bids, gold silver and bronze. Teams that receive a gold bid get their entire trip paid for by Varsity, the organization that runs The Quest competition, teams that receive a silver bid get half of their expenses paid for and teams that receive a bronze bid get a quarter of their expenses paid for.
All three travelling Tigers' cheerleading groups, Pride, Inspir3 (Inspire) and Spirit are headed to the competition. Both Pride and Spirit earned a gold bid and Inspir3 earned a silver bid.
The Pride and Inspir3 teams are comprised of girls age 10 to 18 and Spirit is age 12 and under.
This is the first time in the organization's seven year history sending all three teams to the national competition.
Gloria Jorjakis, a member of team Inspir3 said that all three teams have put together strong competition seasons.
"Spirit had a big win, Pride had a big win and Inspire has had a bunch of wins," she said. "We've been beating our high scores this season which is really good."
Ahead of the competition, Gloria said they have been working on adding more interesting elements to their routines and she is hopeful they can bring home the title of best in the nation.
Gloria added even if they are not able to bring home the gold, she knows this will be an experience she remembers forever.
"Cheer is my life and it's everything to me," she said. "We spend four days a week in the gym together and I don't know what I would do without it."
