Church’s summer fair features crafts, chowder

Aug 7, 2021

The Wesley United Methodist Church held its annual summer fair on Saturday, July 7 — complete with perennial favorites like raffles, baked goods and, of course, Denise Fisher’s famous clam chowder.

In fact, the chowder is so good that some people come specifically to get a cup or bowl to enjoy.

“Everyone loves her chowder,” said volunteer Barbara McAllister.

Fairgoers browsed booths of yard sale items, art, jewelry and handicrafts or mosied through the church’s thrift shop before enjoying a hot lunch in the hall.

“We’re glad to be here today,” said Pastor Ginny Doran. “You never really know what to expect.”
Doran said the church is planning a variety of events for the fall, including an art show, lasagna dinner, and a fashion show featuring items from the thrift shop.

“We’re trying to do some different things and really connect with the community in a different way,” Doran said.

The church also hosts a variety of regularly-scheduled events: On Tuesdays, knitters and crocheters gather to work on items like hats, scarves, and baby blankets to be donated. All items are provided, and members are happy to teach anyone how to knit or crochet.

The church takes part in Mobile Ministries in New Bedford each Friday night to help hand out food to those in need.

On the third Saturday of each month, the church hosts a free community breakfast from 9:30 to 11 a.m. The menu will include breakfast sandwiches with sausage or bacon, homefries, coffee, and juice. All are welcome. Any donations go to charity.

The thrift shop is open on Thursdays and Fridays from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. and on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. with clothing, jewelry, and accessories.

The church is located at 462 Main Street. For more information, call 508-273-7754.
