Claus for a cause at Wareham Dunkin'

Dec 22, 2013

Santa stopped by a Wareham Dunkin’ Donuts on Dec. 21, and it wasn’t to satiate his sweet tooth.

At the West Wareham shop, Santa sat with 125 deserving children, and handed out Christmas gifts donated by the store’s staff.

“It was breath-taking… The kids were handed their gifts, and their mouths were opened so wide,” said Carmen Dwyer, director of operations. “We wanted to do something for the community that does business with us.”

About two weeks ago, franchise owner Dino Pimental came to Dwyer, wanting to give to the community. Within two weeks, they were able to put the event together.

“The hardest thing was to seek the children who needed it the most,” Dwyer said.

The staff reached out to local day cares to compile a list of children, using only their gender and age. From there, Dwyer and fellow staffers Sherri Merchant and Melanie Dias went shopping, getting just over 125 toys.

“We wanted to have a few extra just in case we had other children come in,” Dwyer explained.

The children received letters from Santa himself inviting them to join him at the Dunkin’ Donuts.

“It was just exciting having everyone together,” Dwyer said.

This was the first year the event was held, though Dwyer doubts it will be the last.
