Cleaning beaches for recovery
Richie's Road to Recovery held a beach clean up in Onset Village to honor the Recovery Day of Service, the culmination of National Recovery Month occurring on Saturday, Sept. 30.
Several people came out under an overcast sky and picked up trash near the Onset Bay Center.
Richie Newbert, founder of the non-profit Richie's Road to Recovery, said it was the organization's first time doing the beach cleanup.
Newbert founded the non-profit approximately a year and a half ago, he said. He is a CCAR trained recovery coach, and core to his practice are meditation walks, where people in recovery can get together and talk with others who share their experiences.
Newbert hopes to venture out beyond that core concept with the non-profit, hosting other events specifically for people in recovery, such as a family fun night. People in recovery may have trouble socializing with people who don't share that experience, Newbert said.
The Onset Bay Association and the Buzzards Bay Coalition contributed to the event.
