Cleanup from diesel spill is still ongoing in Onset Bay
The cleanup from an April 25 diesel spill at Point Independence Yacht Club in Onset is currently ongoing, according to Onset Fire Chief Ray Goodwin.
“It’s progressing,” said Goodwin, whose department was among initial responders to the incident and who took initial command of the situation. “I’m not sure specifically where it is, but a majority of the cleanup’s been done.”
Goodwin said that as of around mid-week last week, those responsible for the cleanup effort had removed contaminated soil that had been affected by the spill, which saw approximately 250-gallons of diesel spilled into Onset Bay.
According to Goodwin, the spill was a result of the mechanical failure of a joint that connects a fuel pipe to the fuel pump on a dock at Point Independence. The licensed/permitted pump is used to supply fuel to marine vessels.
Harbormaster Garry Buckminster said that Clean Harbors were hired by the club to take care of the cleanup. Following the incident, Buckminster said that the spill had been contained to an approximately 100-foot area near the club and that it had not spread out any further into the bay.
An unidentified source who answered the phone at the club Monday morning said that work was still currently in progress and that they were getting into the final stages of the cleanup.
