Coliform found in Onset water, problem resolved
The Onset Water Department has detected coliform in the water system, but subsequent tests showed the problem to be resolved. The water department is emphasizing that this is not an emergency.
Residents do not need to boil water or take any other corrective action, however, if you have any specific health concerns, Onset Water officials recommend you consult your doctor.
Out of the 20 water samples taken during November, two showed the presence of “total coliform bacteria,” bacteria that are found in soil, and in human or animal waste.
Usually, coliforms are a sign that there could be a problem with a water system’s treatment or distribution system, according to the Onset Water Department.
Officials completed follow-up testing to ensure that, specifically, fecal coliform or E. coli were not present.
“We did not find any of these in our subsequent testing, and further testing shows that this problem has been resolved,” officials said.
