Community gets a peek at renovated Spinney Library

May 31, 2011

Onset's newly renovated Spinney Memorial Library opened its doors to the community for a few hours Sunday and Monday afternoon.

And a steady stream of visitors walked through the doors -- some to take a look at the building's transformation, some bearing bags or boxes of books to donate to the library.

The original Spinney Library, built in the late 1800's, was enlarged and renovated under the auspices of the Friends of the Wareham Free Library. Operated by the Spinney Memorial Library board formed by the Friends, it will open in early July, staffed entirely by volunteers.

On Monday, Spinney Memorial Board chair Priscilla Porter marveled at the outpouring of community support the library has received as it prepares to open. Books from so many people stopping by to donate. Fishing rods from an anonymous donor. A rack for the rods from M&D's Bait and Tackle. Even the man who was hired to mow the lawn refused to take any money for the work!

Do you have some books to donate to the new library? The doors will be open this coming Saturday, June 4, from 10 a.m. to noon to accept donations. The library is located at 259 Onset Ave.
