Community members learn ins-and-outs of TV lighting

Jan 12, 2010

From aperture settings to white balancing to scene composition and the positioning of lights, more than 20 community members learned a slew of 3-point-lighting techniques, tips, and tricks at Tuesday's lighting workshop, held in the Wareham Community Television (WCTV) studio on Main Street.

"Lighting is not an accident," said Dan Hnatio, who conducted the workshop, sharing more than three decades of experience in the communications industry.

A Stow resident, Hnatio is the president of Active Communications, a media production company which specializes in lighting, grip, and multi-camera field productions. He also teaches his trade at Emerson College and Framingham State College.

Hnatio stressed the importance of making scenes look as natural as possible so that technological aspects of a television show or movie do not jar the audience.

"Look at every scene you're doing and ask yourself, 'how many suns are on this planet?'," Hnatio said.

The lighting workshop was the second in what executive director Jay Heard said he hopes will become a series of monthly workshops at the station, with local media professionals teaching basic production techniques. He said the workshops are open to the entire Wareham community, not just members of WCTV.

"It'll help [people] appreciate television and movies a little bit more," he said.

Wareham resident and WCTV member Cheryl Ikasalo said the workshops are very informative.

"You get to actually touch the equipment and see how it works," she said.

WCTV is a member-driven organization and the station is always looking for new members, Heard said. For information about membership and upcoming workshops, call WCTV at 508-273-2340 or visit the website at www.warehamtv.org.
