Community Preservation Funds awarded for field improvements and historical windows

Residents approved spending $60,000 to restore historical windows in the First Congregational Church and $24,000 to improve the softball fields and fencing at Westfield complex during Monday's annual spring Town Meeting.

Vice President of Wareham Girls Softball Nick Petronelli spoke on behalf of the organization.

“We're a shy group but I can tell you that we work hard,” he said. “There are almost 150 girls in the league.... so many of the girls in this town need it, need an escape from every day life.”

Petronelli received a brief moment of applause from voters after his statement.

Town Administrator Derek Sullivan assured voters that the improvement would be an "appropriate use of [Community Preservation Committee] funds."

Though the article on historical window restoration faced opposition from the Finance Committee in a contested vote (three in favor, two opposed, and one abstained) and from a citizen who spoke out against the article claiming that it would set a bad precedent, it passed by a majority.

Sullivan explained that this article would be a legal use of Community Preservation Committee (CPC) funds.

Town Meeting also approved appropriation of CPC annual revenues in the following amounts: $39,000 for administrative expenses, $78,000 to Open Space Reserves, $78,000 to Historical Preservation Reserves and $78,000 to Affordable Housing Reserves.

The window restorations fall under the "Historical Preservation" category while the softball fields fall into the "Open Space Reserves."
