Community remembers Trey Miranda with balloon release for his 19th birthday

Jun 17, 2017

Trey Miranda’s friends and family gathered at Centre Cemetery on Saturday with blue star balloons, graduation and birthday balloons to celebrate his life.

Miranda died on June 5, 2016 of brain cancer, shortly before his 18th birthday. His mother, Teena Miranda, said she wanted to get all his friends together to remember him at this time of year. His 19th birthday would be on June 23.

“Trey would have wanted this,” Miranda said. "He'd probably want everybody to be together."

Miranda wore a “Trey strong” headband, a sweatshirt with his photo and "Trey strong" bracelets on her wrists and ankles and brought pizza to the cemetery for Trey's friends. She played Trey’s favorite song, “Taxi” by Rosewood Bape.

Over 30 people attended, bringing balloons and hugs for Miranda.

“There’s a lot of people here,” said Jordan Phillips, a friend of Trey’s. “We usually get together around holidays to stay around Teena and hold her up.”

Phillips said the community has been supportive of the family and friends of Trey since he was diagnosed. At the cemetery, people shared memories of Trey, ate slices of pizza and released balloons into the sky, watching them until they were out of sight.

“Trey always talked about never being forgotten,” said his friend Ryan Almeida. “We want to make sure he’s not.”

The Trey Miranda Foundation donates school supplies and backpacks to students in need to help them continue their education. This year, the foundation gave seven scholarships to Wareham High School seniors, including Phillips and Almeida, in Trey’s memory.

A motorcycle run in Trey’s honor is scheduled for July 23 at the Dudley L. Brown VFW.
