Competition and celebration at Swifts Beach Field Day

Sunday featured no work and plenty of play for Swifts Beach residents who ended summer with a variety of competitions along the beach during the annual Labor Day Field Day.

The two who came out on top for the challenging, three-legged race were ecstatic about their victory.

"I never win anything," said Holly Benson, who finished first with her sister Tori.

The Bensons live in a summer cottage in Swifts Beach and have competed in the race since they were children.

"They put on a great show every year," said Holly.

The Swifts Beach Association has hosted its annual Labor Day Field Day for approximately 35 years now, said Jan Pilleri, the event's organizer.

"It's just to bring everyone together at the end of the season," she said.

With a couple of hundred people at the event, all hands from the Pilleri family were on deck. Pilleri's husband, Tom, directed the event with a megaphone while her children and nieces assisted.

Pilleri said the event wouldn't have been possible without the generous donations of water, snacks and more from area businesses.
