Congregational Church holding Pride Month art show

First Congregational Church of Wareham member Katherine Hanson believes that, as the folk song says, “All God’s creatures have a place in the choir.”
That is why she is organizing “Pride Pop-up,” an LGBTQ-themed art exhibition at the church, 11 Gibbs Ave., on Saturday, June 24 from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
The show is the second in a series of art events at the church, which are intended to foster diversity in the community and reinforce the church’s message that “all are welcome.”
“The queer community and the queer culture have a lot to share with the non-queer community,” Hanson said. “Those perspectives can really enhance the culture.”
Six to 12 artists, mostly hailing from the South Coast and Cape Cod, will present pottery, prints, photography, quilts and other creative works. The oldest artist is an 86-year-old Wareham woman and LGBTQ ally who sews quilts.
Half of the artists are part of the LGBTQ community, and half are not.
“I am intentionally not wanting to point out and distinguish [which is which],” Hanson said, “because I really don’t want to fall into stereotypes.”
Hanson, an abstract mixed-media printmaker and paper sculptor, will be exhibiting some of her own pieces in the show.
“I’m really fascinated by nature and how humans tend to forget that we are part of nature,” she said. “That sense that we are all the same. Whether we are a tree or a person, we are all created in that sense of greater beauty.”
Admission to “Pride Pop-up” is free.
