Construction site near Town Hall to house equipment, materials for Route 6 bridge project
Construction is being done near Town Hall to clear space for materials and equipment being used to replace the bridge on Route 6 over the Weweantic River.
The construction includes not only clearing space but also resetting some of the stone walls that were on the property.
Town Administrator Derek Sullivan said the town is also making money off the construction. The Massachusetts Department of Transportation, who is doing the bridge construction, is paying the town $1,000 a month to use the space for the first year of construction. After 12 months, the price will increase by $250 every year and Sullivan said he expects the program to take two years.
“It should be a great win-win situation for a project that’s being done in our town,” he said.
The Massachusetts Department of Transportation is working to replace the aging bridge with a modern structure, including two lanes in each direction, shoulders for added safety and 10-foot wide shared use paths on both sides.
