Coronavirus-conscious concerts showcase classical music

A crowd of about 40 concert goers gathered at the Church of the Good Shepherd on Sunday, Aug. 15 at 3 p.m. to enjoy one of the classical concerts in the Music From Land’s End series.

Wearing masks and seated socially distanced from other parties, attendees were treated to a selection of classical music intended to showcase the beauty of the instruments it was played on.

The concert featured Cynthia Roberts and Ariadne Daskalakis playing baroque violins, Phoebe Carrai on baroque cello and Sebastian Gottschick playing baroque viola. The musicians performed works by Haydn, Bach, Frescobaldi and Scarlatti.

Daskalakis, director of the Music From Land’s End summer concert series, said the oldest instrument in use was Roberts’ 1671 baroque violin.

She thanked the church, located at 74 High St., for providing such a “wonderful welcome” for the musicians.

“You’ll hear how beautiful the acoustics are in this room,” Daskalakis told concert goers before the performance.

Introducing the pieces, Daskalakis described the music in a variety of ways — “romantic,” “serious,” and even “humorous.”

Those who attended the concert enjoyed the performance.

Richard Lobert said he tries to attend the Music From Land’s End concert series every year from East Falmouth.

“I’m sure glad they’re back,” he said. “I enjoy it every single time. It’s just one of those special things that makes this part of Cape Cod a great [place].”

Lobert said the hardest part of attending the concerts is crossing the bridge on a Sunday afternoon — but it’s always worth it, he said.

“We all had big smiles on our faces,” said Lisa, who attended the concert with her companion Richard. “It was wonderful — absolutely wonderful.”

The pair came from Rochester for the concert.

“I love the classical stuff like this,” Richard said. He added that he wasn’t an expert on composers or specific pieces, but said the concert was “terrific” all the same. “I just love the sound.”
