Coworkers raising funds for family of 20-year-old Wareham man killed in Charge Pond Road crash

Nov 19, 2012

A 20-year-old Wareham man was killed and another was injured in a one-car rollover accident on Charge Pond Road just after 3 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 17.

Jordan Lopes, 20, of Wareham, was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Lopes was a passenger in the front seat of a 2008 Chevrolet Impala, which first-responders found on its side in a wooded area on Charge Pond Road, according to Wareham Police.

The driver of the vehicle, 20-year-old Jonathan Lydon of Wareham, suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to Tobey Hospital, police said.

Friends gathered at the crash site on Saturday afternoon. Flowers were placed around a tree, and a balloon with the message "I love you" blew in the wind.

Lopes is survived by his mother, Joslyn Redd of West Wareham, his father, Jonathan Lopes of Hyannis, two sisters, and a brother. For his full obituary, click here.

Lopes graduated from Wareham High School in 2010. He was attending Cape Cod Community College, studying business management, according to his family. He was a weekly host at WKKL, the college's radio station.

Lopes was a fixture at Kool Kone, where he worked essentially since he was old enough to be on the clock, said Kool Kone owner Tom Strom.

"He's part of my family," said Strom. "He's not just a worker. He's like a son to me."

Strom has owned the restaurant for the past eight years, and Lopes worked there nearly as long.

"I can't say a bad thing about him. We enjoyed music together," Strom said. "We'd talk about music all day long."

Lopes' coworkers had fun with him while he was hosting his radio show.

"We used to call him up and tease him," Strom said. "We used to call up and request music, and he'd play it and he'd give a shout out to all of us."

When Kool Kone would have any kind of themed celebration — such as "Spongebob Day," named for the Nickelodeon cartoon character — Lopes was first in line to help.

"Jordan had no problem putting the Spongebob outfit on, and he'd dance with the kids," Strom said.

Strom, who is often called upon when community organizations need donations, is hoping the community will help Kool Kone help Lopes' family.

Stop by Kool Kone, tell them you're "here for Jordan," and donate $10. You'll receive a coupon for fish and chips, a "Blue Plate Special," or a chicken finger plate with a large drink and an ice cream. Use the coupon now, or save it for next season.

Proceeds will help defray the costs of funeral expenses.

"It's just sad that this has happened," said Strom. "He's a great friend."

Wareham Police, along with State Police, are continuing to investigate the cause of the crash.

Wareham Week will update this story when more information becomes available.

A previous version of this story was briefly online and indicated that Jordan Lopes attended Upper Cape Tech. He graduated from Wareham High School in 2010.
