Dave "Doc" Johnson receives license to tattoo

Feb 19, 2016

As of Wednesday afternoon, there is a new licensed tattoo artist in town: Dave “Doc” Johnson.

Known for his piercing work at Saints and Sinners, Doc Johnson will provide cosmetic and artistic tattoos, as well as micropigmentation, which can be used to cover scars.

“I've been in the business for 25 years now,” said Johnson, going on to add that he's been practicing his trade up and down the East Coast.

To reassure and convince the board of his qualifications, Johnson also explained his formal education in tattooing. He graduated from UMass Darmouth with a degree in Biology, received a certification in cosmetic tattooing and micropigmentation, and a Medical Assistance degree from Bay State College.

He showed the board members a portfolio of his work and sketches, as well as his certifications.

They unanimously passed the motion to grant him licensing.

With him was Drew Risk, who applied for an apprenticeship license. Risk, who is originally a painter, learned tattooing from his older brother. He said the art comes naturally, given his painting background.

The board voted to pass his request as well.
