Dinosaurs, bumblebees, princesses, and other costumed canines at Petco contest

Oct 26, 2013

There were dinosaurs, bumblebees, Cleopatra and Marc Antony, a biker babe, a hula girl, and other creative canines at Petco's costume contest on Saturday.

A hamster also showed off his appropriately decorated cage, and his brother, a guinea pig, sported devil ears.

It was all in good fun at the Wareham Crossing store's "Halloween Bootique." The costume contest capped off Wareham Crossing's Boo Bash, which featured trick-or-treating through the stores and pumpkin decorating for the little ones.

While some pet-lovers chose ready-made costumes, others got crafty.

"All our milk cartons, pennies, earrings, pins..." said Claire Parent of Marion, referring to all the pieces that came together for pooch Misty's Cleopatra outfit and her sidekick Angus' Marc Antony costume.

The pair of pooches took the first-place prize in the contest.

Janet Poyant of Rochester was quick to give credit to Parent, her sister, for the creative designs. And it wasn't the first time the sisters and their pups have participated in the annual costume contest.

"They're always a couple," Poyant said with a smile.

The judges also gave Calli a nod for her owner-designed outfit.

"She's the pumpkin princess!" said Kathy McCray of Rochester, who designed Calli's... you guessed it... princess-esque get-up, complete with pumpkin graphic.

Third-place went to a home-grown tiny pup -- chihuahua Esmeralda -- and her owner, Donna Ashley. Esmeralda was ready to ditch the chilly fall weather and head to Hawaii in her hula outfit.
