Dolls, doggies, and bicycles on parade

Most of the entries were last-minute, but the 32 children and adults who entered their bicycles, dolls, and pets into the parade at the Onset Pier Saturday morning were as festive and sparkly as the Fourth of July holiday commanded.

Onset Bay Association President Eleanor Martin said the committee decided to put on the first annual Doll and Pet parade, in order to draw more people to the area.

“This was stuff that, when we were kids, they used to do,” Martin said. “We thought we would give it a shot, and see how it goes.”

There were 20 entries in the bicycle parade, seven entries in the doll parade, and five entries in the pet parade. There were prizes for first, second, and third place winners in each procession, but Martin said the committee made sure to give something to everyone who entered.

“We have little flags, mini beach balls, and pinwheels, so every kid is going to get something,” Martin said.

Nicole Calvin, whose son Payton, 8, won second place in the carriage parade, said she remembered her mother dressing her up as a child.

“My mom dressed me up as a fisherman, with the little yellow suit, and one of those hats,” Calvin said. “It was really cute. It’s nice to see them bringing some of this stuff back.”

The winners of the bicycle parade, in order from first to third, were Jolee Johnson, Payton Calvin, and Julia Stevens. The winners of the doll parade were Grace Legault, Tess Finnegan Sylvia, and Katrina Semple. The winners of the dog parade were Carmie Lockwood, Jordan Flaherty, and Maureen Sergei.
