Donations sought for Wareham students in need

Feb 15, 2019

The Office of Beyond School Time is seeking sponsorship from Wareham businesses and residents to support their weekend backpack program.

The program is volunteer-based and ensures students facing food insecurity have enough to eat at home.

The program began at Wareham Middle School in 2016 in partnership with the Kiwanis Club of Bourne and Wareham and includes siblings of middle school students who attend other Wareham schools.

This year, Minot Forest students were added to the program when they joined the middle school campus.

School officials said the goal is to expand the program again to include Decas Elementary students once adequate and sustainable funding has been secured.

A donation of $125 provides one student with weekly supplemental food packs for up to a year.

Anyone can participate by contributing funds toward this annual amount. All donations go directly toward food for students.

The backpack program has been supported with grants and food donations by the Wareham Girl Scouts, COVANTA/SEMASS, Chatham Village Croutons and several area houses of worship. School groups such as the High School Basketball team, Ms. Thatcher’s Global Challenges class and other groups have also contributed.
