Doo-Wop Singers to perform in Onset
In the ‘50s and ‘60s, Doo-Wop hit the streets of Boston, but it will soon arrive in Onset.
On August 31, the Doo-Wop Singers, which is a group comprised of some of the most successful Doo-Wop singers to come out of Beantown, will perform at the Dudley Brown VFW Pavilion.
Ronnie Robinson, one of the organizers of the concert for the Band of Angels, said that the show is part of fundraising efforts for an even bigger party in Boston. Every year, the Band of Angels, a Boston-area social club, puts on what they call the Juneteenth Celebration at Franklin Park, which celebrates the end of slavery in America.
Robinson said the Doo-Wop Singers are made up of five singers from Boston, all of whom achieved various successes with their own respective groups before joining forces.
He said that Chris Scott and Ilanga are original members of the G-Clefs, a Boston quartet that saw two songs hit the charts. Because some of the founding members are no longer able to perform, they joined forces with John Wyche of the C-Quins, Gilly White of the Original Ambitions, and Linda Henderson of Third Arrival.
“It’s going to be different,” said Robinson, noting that when the Band of Angles typically throws concerts in the area, they’re more traditional R&B than Doo-Wop is. “We think that people are really going to enjoy it.”
Robinson said that the money raised will go towards feeding people at the Juneteenth Celebration, as some people are in need of a meal, which they provide.
“We buy pounds and pounds of hot dogs, hamburgers and chicken,” he said. “We provide food for those who don’t have food. Doo-Wop Sunday will provide a vehicle to do this.”
The event will take place from 1 to 6 p.m. at the VFW, which is at 5 Gibbs Ball Park Road in Onset. A $12 donation is suggested.
