Jul 8, 2016

The East Wareham team of Wareham Little League faced off against Onset in the championship game on Wednesday, taking home a victory and a trophy.

The team won 15-5 against Onset, adding to their 22-0 record for the season. The team scored more than 300 runs this season, nearly 40 of which were homeruns. They allowed opposing teams 10 earned runs, and gave up a total of 30 runs.

Head coach Bobby Payzant said, "It was a work in progress; it wasn't something that just happened."

Payzant has coached the team for three years now, and said they began shining this year.

No stranger to the sport himself, Payzant played ball for the University of New Hampshire and semi-pro baseball in the Cranberry League for 10 years. He was recently inducted into the Hall of Fame for the league.

Payzant is currently coaching an All-Star team consisting of 12 Wareham players, seven of whom are from the East Wareham team. For the next five weekends, the team will play in different towns and at different locations.

They play tonight against Marshfield at 7 p.m. at Monument Beach, 601 Shore Road, Bourne.
