Eighth grader to represent Wareham in annual Boston project

In just a few days, eighth grader Natalia Moulding will represent the town of Wareham in Boston.

Moulding is one of 351 eighth grade students who will take part in Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker’s Project 351 initiative on Jan. 18, Martin Luther King, Jr. day. The name stands for the 351 towns across the state.

The project was started by former governor Deval Patrick, and “was a way to bring together the communities around Massachusetts,” middle school Principal Dan Minkle said.

“It gets eighth graders from across the state, and gets the acquainted with community service, and other projects,” Minkle said. “Like-minded kids get together for a good reason.”

But Moulding isn’t unfamiliar with community service. Minkle said when he called her to ask her about her background in community service, she responded, “‘Well, this weekend I was in Rhode Island cleaning up a beach with my parents.’”

The soft-spoken, 14-year-old Moulding said she is also a Girl Scout. She is a cadet, and has already received her Bronze Award, which is the highest award a junior Girl Scout can receive. For her Bronze Award project, Moulding said she and her troop created a small “stop bullying” campaign that included a movie and posters.

Moulding said she is working towards her Silver Award, and has in mind for her project something that would incentivize middle school students to recycle their lunch trays, rather than throw them in the garbage.

“I notice at lunch, a lot of the trays are styrofoam, and they are recyclable, and I notice that, a lot of times, they are just thrown away,” Moulding said. “The amount of trays thrown away each lunch is crazy.”

Moulding said she is excited for the project, and that there will be four different stations around Boston at which she and her student compatriots will learn and help with certain community projects.

“We don’t know what they are going to be, yet. They said it will be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” Moulding said.
