Elementary students to get new community field trips this year

Wareham students in kindergarten through fourth grade will get a chance to explore their community on some new field trips offered through the Wareham Elementary PTA.

"When I was little, we would tour the fire station, and police station,” said PTA President Nichole Mazzoli. “Due to budget cuts and other financial issues, my kids have never done that.”

Mazzoli said grades kindergarten through second grade will have structured field trips to the library, fire station, and police station.

“We wanted them to meet [emergency personnel] in a non-crisis situation,” she said.

Mazzoli said they would go in class groups, rather than all students in one grade at once, and that the PTA is particularly excited about the kindergarten’s library trips.

“As much as we usually think, ‘Oh, it’s a library, kids go there,’ they don’t,” Mazzoli said. “They will go for story time with [librarian Marcia] Hickey. They will also get to do crafts, and get their first-ever library card.”

The third and fourth grades’ trips will be slightly less structured, in that each teacher will get to decide where the classes go.

“Right now, third grade will be going to the Tremont Nail Company, but we also talked about some other places,” Mazzoli said. “It may not be quite as structured as kindergarten through second grade, but they will be visiting different places within their community.”

Mazzoli said all the trips will be fully funded through the PTA, and that the town’s transportation department gave them “an affordable rate” to allow the students to travel around town.Wareham students in kindergarten through fourth grade will get a chance to explore their community on some new field trips offered through the Wareham Elementary PTA.
