Elementary students learn value of community involvement

May 2, 2016

The students of the Minot Values and Pride Club had a busy April, cleaning up town as part of the “Don’t Trash Wareham” effort and raising money to help families in need.

The MVP Club is a community service group made up of fourth graders at Minot Forest Elementary School.

During April vacation, students volunteered to clean up Minot Avenue during the “Don’t Trash Wareham” effort. Club members were assisted by volunteers from the Bourne-Wareham Kiwanis Club and Mathew Nawoichik, Giselle Priestley, Carly Castro and Drew Castro.

In April, MVP Club members taught Minot Forest Elementary School students how small change can make a big “change” in their community. MVP Club members presented Turning Point with a check for $353.75 to help families in need in the Wareham area. Turning Point is a Wareham-based resource center for the homeless.

The group organized a “Change Challenge,” in which students and faculty members collected change for six weeks. This was the second year in the row that the MVP Club raised money for Turning Point.

The MVP Club was created by fourth grade teacher, Michael Houdlette, in 2014 to inspire, reinforce and promote the values of community service and community pride.
