Elks donation will send kids to DARE camp
Some Wareham Middle School students owe a debt of gratitude to the Wareham-New Bedford Lodge of Elks #73.
On Wednesday, lodge officials donated $925 to Wareham Police that will be used to send 20 students from fifth and sixth grade to the Plymouth County DARE Summer Camp Program.
“We are very grateful to the Elks for this donation and their continuing cooperation,” said Police Chief Kevin Walsh. “We appreciate the Elks support.”
Students who teachers believe will benefit most from the camp will be selected to attend. Sponsored by the District Attorney’s Office, the camp teaches how to resist using alcohol, tobacco, drugs and violence.
The donation was part of a total $2,000 Gratitude Grant from the Elks. In addition to police, the New Bedford New Bedford Boys & Girls Club received $500 and the Wareham Boys & Girls Club was awarded $617.
The Wareham Boys & Girls Club donation will be used to purchase materials for a community garden.
On hand to present the donations from the Elks were Donna Allen, Perry Gerlach, Terri Scott and Ted Hatch.
