Energy Aggregation finally coming to Wareham

Mar 19, 2019

Wareham residents and business owners could sign up to save money on their electricity bills later this year, as the energy aggregation plan approved by voters at the Fall 2015 Town Meeting will become a reality sometime this year. Chair of the Board of Selectmen Alan Slavin said at the board’s March 19 meeting that Wareham and Good Energy, the energy aggregation company, are on their way to reaching an agreement.

“We voted at Town Meeting for energy aggregation, which was basically a program that allowed a company to come in and purchase energy for the whole town,” said Alan Slavin.

Slavin estimated that the plan could save home or business owners between $100 and $150 a year. The town missed the initial cut-off due to the date of Town Meeting, but the town will be given a contract from Good Energy sometime in June.

“If someone doesn’t want to be in this program, they can simply opt out,” said Slavin.

Slavin emphasized that the program’s savings will go to residents, not the town itself.

“There will be savings available,” Slavin said. “As everybody knows, the energy rates have been steadily banging up. We’re trying to help everybody out. It’s finally here, and we’re sorry it took two years.”
