England, English winners in Wareham Fire District election

Apr 16, 2011

Rick England was elected to the only open seat on the Prudential Committee in the Wareham Fire District election Saturday, and in the only other race to appear on the ballot, incumbent John English was voted into his sixth term on the Board of Water Commissioners.

England beat out incumbent nominee Kenneth Baptiste, who was running for a third term. England earned 370 of the votes in the race, while Baptiste finished with 234 votes.

It was England’s first run for public office.

“I’ve never done anything like this before,” he said. “I’m excited to get started on the job and be a team player.”

Baptiste said he was disappointed by the voters' decision, but enjoyed his time as a committee member.

“I served the district. I hope [England] does a good job,” he said.

England will serve a three-year term on the board.

English earned 199 votes in the Board of Water Commissioners race. Write-in candidate John Connolly received 93 votes.

English was running on sticker campaign to fill a single vacant seat on the board for a three-year term.

“It feels really good,” English said after the results were announced. “I appreciate the taxpayers and everyone who voted."

A total of 614 votes were cast in the election, a turn-out similar to last year's, which Wareham Fire District officials considered to be high.
