Everything is illuminated at Snowy Night Bright Lights YMCA walk
It may not have been a snowy night, but it certainly was one filled with bright lights at the Gleason Family YMCA’s Snowy Night Bright Lights illuminated walk/run Friday evening.
The walk was illuminated with more than 400 candles, softly glowing inside milk jugs along the Y’s outdoor walking trail. Lights decorated trees along the trail, and two Y staffers dressed as Mrs. Claus and Santa Claus sang songs by a bonfire with walkers pausing to toast s’mores, and sing carols.
Walk organizer and YMCA Aquatics Director Mel Dyer said it was the fourth year the Y has held the walk. It is aimed at getting families – pets included – outside for a bit of healthy fun, in addition to raising money for the Y’s swim team.
“It’s a healthy way to get out, and a way for families to enjoy good Christmas weather, or holiday weather,” Dyer said. “We have this great trail that goes around the building – why not make use of it?”
Membership coordinator Cathy Longfield estimated there were about 50 people at the event, and at least 15 dogs.
At $15 per person, with a special family discount package that included breakfast with Santa the following morning, Longfield said she believed the event would bring in between $600 and $700 for the swim team.
Wareham resident and YMCA member Linda Domina said she was enjoying the night.
“It’s a beautiful evening,” Domina said.
