Family member arrested in assault on elderly disabled man

Thomas Tavares, 20, has been been charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon in addition to numerous other felonies after he allegedly beat a disabled elderly family member.

The incident occurred at approximately 5:30 a.m. this morning.  After arriving at the scene, police were told by the victim that Tavares ran out of the house and was in possession of a .40 caliber handgun.

Tavares was arrested at a nearby residence.

He was arraigned at Wareham 4th District Court on September 3, on the charges of assault and battery on a disabled person over the age of 60, assault by means of a dangerous weapon, assault by means of a dangerous weapon on a person over the age of 60, carrying a firearm without a license, possession of a large capacity firearm, and possession of ammunition without a Federal Identification Card.  Tavares is currently being held at the Plymouth County House of Correction on $10,000 cash bail.
