Ferreira appointed to Board of Health

Sep 18, 2013

Zoning Board of Appeals Chair Ken Ferreira was appointed to the Board of Health at the Tuesday September 17, Board of Selectmen's meeting.

Ferreira said he was approached by a Board of Health member because they were looking for someone with engineering experience, and Ferreira is a professional engineer. He also serves on the Zoning Board of Appeals.

In February of 2013 The Board of Health passed a regulation requiring that all new construction projects, or homes with failed septic systems within 500 feet of a body of water install "denitrification" septic systems.

The old regulation required the systems for new projects within 150 feet of a body of water.

Denitrification systems remove some nitrogen from the wastewater. Too much nitrogen spurs algae blooms which can kill fish and other marine life.
