Fire officials: 'Be aware of snow on roofs, blocked vents and hydrants' during snow storms
With snow piled high around town and no end in sight, the Wareham Fire Department is urging residents to be aware of a number of safety issues that can be caused by snow and ice.
Fire Chief Robert McDuffy said that starting Thursday, the department would be surveying mobile home parks in town for safety issues such as heavy snow loads on roofs and blocked vents that could cause carbon monoxide to build up inside a home. He advised people to clear walkways and driveways for emergency vehicles.
McDuffy said in previous years, there have been roof collapses after heavy snow storms. He said that clearing snow off of roofs is not the department's role, but they will be alerting residents if they see an issue.
Nine of the town's 17 mobile home parks fall under the Wareham Fire District, according to McDuffy.
Anyone who owns a building with a flat roof should take steps to avoid potential snow and ice damage or a roof collapse.
McDuffy also said if citizens know there is a fire hydrant near their homes that is not cleared they can help the fire department by clearing it.
Assistant Fire Chief John Kelley said after the Jan. 27 blizzard, 15 to 20 firefighters were out for 20 hours clearing fire hydrants around town.
Any residents who know there is a fire hydrant near their home but are not physically able to clear it should contact the Wareham Fire Department.
