First graders celebrate 100 days of school
Friday marked Wareham Public Schools' 100th day of school, and students participated in the celebration.
The first graders paraded around the inside perimeter of the John W. Decas School while their classmates sat along the walls and cheered them on. Parade participants smiled and waved at their classmates, who cheered them on from the sidelines.
Each first grader was encouraged to bring in a homemade "100 Day" vest to wear in the parade. The students had fun dreaming up their decorations; vests decorated with pencils, magnetic words, cotton balls, feathers, stickers, googly eyes, paper cups, dried banana slices, Ghirardelli chocolates, and even light-up stars.
The school also began a community service project several weeks ago, as part of the 100 Days of School celebration. The intended goal of the community service project was to raise 100 tuna cans for 100 days of school, to be donated to a local food pantry.
Each first grade class took turns counting the cans daily, recording the total, and announcing the new total to the school. By Friday, the school had gathered 312 cans, with a few stragglers still coming in.
Some first-grade classrooms brought Super Bowl cheer along with them, in anticipation of Sunday’s game. Patriots headbands dotted the hallways, and several vests sported stickers as well.
The big game was Decas' overall theme on Friday. According to Principal Donna Noonan, the teachers had their own “Soup-er Bowl”, where they brought in homemade soup and voted on the best offering.
