Flagship Cinemas to be redeveloped as Eversource training center

Dec 4, 2023

A project from Eversource may make Wareham the site of a statewide training center for electric line workers.

Eversource proposes to redevelop the former Flagship Cinemas at 37 Doty Street into a training center and emergency response staging area.

"The training center will be used to consolidate our electric and substation operations training across the state under one roof," said Priscilla Reis, spokesperson for Eversource.

Outside the building, the facility will have approximately 90,000 square feet of space for training zones with permanent equipment, poles and structures, according to project documents.

Inside, the building will house classrooms and shop training for apprenticeship programs, said Reis.

"Our lineworkers will also use this facility to learn about new technology and ever-evolving safety training," Reis added.

The facility will also serve as a staging area during storms and power outages, allowing for quicker response to incidents along the South Coast.

The project appeared before the Planning Board for a public hearing on Monday, Nov. 27. It requires a special permit and site plan review from the planning board because it's above a threshold of ten new parking spaces created, according to project documents.

The Planning Board took no action at that meeting, and Eversource will appear again with the project at a future meeting, said Planning Board Chair Michael King.
