Flagship proposes adult beverages, comfier seats
Adults with a hankering for more than just soda to sip during showtimes at Flagship Cinemas may soon be in luck.
The independent theatre chain’s manager, George Shepard, will go before the Board of Selectmen Feb. 16 to apply for a beer and wine license. He said the theatre did not want to offer hard liquor, because it would not be conducive to the establishment’s family atmosphere.
“It’s basically because of the industry – we are trying to keep up with the times,” Shepard said. “The AMC in North Dartmouth has been doing this for a while.”
Shepard said the theatre is also looking to upgrade its seats, and add a self-serve soda machine.
If the alcoholic beverage license is approved, the bar area will be located to the left of the theatre’s entrance, and will be for adults only, Shepard said. As a part-time bartender for the last 20 years, Shepard said he doesn’t anticipate problems with underage drinking.
“Anyone who looks remotely under 40 years old has to show proof of age,” Shepard said. “As we do now, there is constant monitoring of the theatres, so those beverages won’t get into the wrong hands.”
In order for the theatre to offer alcohol, Shepard said the 12 crew members and five management staff members of the Wareham Flagship have been certified to serve alcohol, which only cost the theatre $50.
The new seats, Shepard said, will not be as large or ornate as IMAX electronic seats, but they will be larger. There will also be loveseats.
As for the self-serve machine initiative – Shepard said they decided to put it in, so customers could mix drink flavors to their hearts’ content.
“They can do whatever they want. Their cups, their refills,” Shepard said.
