Flames broil at fast-food joint
A drive thru is usually the easiest way through fast food, but not this time.
A car caught on fire while waiting at the drive-thru window of Burger King, located on Cranberry Highway in East Wareham, eventually setting the building on fire as well.
The call came in at 2:25 p.m. Before the fire reached the building, the people inside and outside of Burger King had evacuated, according to first-responders. There were no injuries.
Firefighters removed parts of the building to make sure the fire had not entered the building anywhere.
"It did not extend into the building, just the exterior," said Wareham Assistant Fire Chief John Kelley.
"Right now, our only concern is food-wise," said Patrick MacDonald, Health Inspector. "Everything not sealed will have to be thrown away. Then we'll come in tomorrow and do a final inspection in the morning."
Three fire engines, a ladder truck, an Emergency Medical Services vehicle and numerous police cars were at the scene.
"I don't believe it appears to be suspicious," said Kelley. "I don't believe [the driver of the vehicle] even knew the vehicle was on fire."
The fire has been ruled accidental, according to the Wareham Fire Department, and an estimated $20,000 worth of damage occurred.
The name of the driver has not been released.
