Flushing of town water pipes begins April 23

Apr 8, 2012

The Wareham Fire District will be flushing the District's water mains from Monday, April 23 until Saturday, June 30 between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. daily.

The Water Department will set out signs and use its reverse 911 system to notify customers when they will be in a particular area. Because of the nature of the work, however, they will not be able to predict how long flushing an area will take.

The Water Department advises customers to check before using their water, as water may become dirty, discolored, or cloudy due to air getting trapped in the water. These are normal and common conditions that will resolve on their own by waiting for a period of time.

Flushing is done in order to protect the water supply and as part of the Wareham Fire District’s annual water main and fire hydrant preventive maintenance.

Because the District does not disinfect its water supply, flushing is necessary to remove sediment which accumulates in water pipes and fosters the growth of harmful bacteria.

The Water Department will be adding a low dosage of chlorine to the water during flushing operations as an added precaution against bacteria.

Notices will also be posted on the website www.warehamfiredistrict.org once it is developed in the near future.
