Former Boston Celtic Chris Herren will be the guest speaker at the Stop the Violence, Increase the Peace rally, scheduled for Saturday, February 26 at 6:30 p.m. at the Wareham High School gym.

During the past several weeks, Selectman Brenda Eckstrom was joined by community leaders to devise long-term goals to complement plans for a rally to end community violence. The idea was introduced following a spurt in violent crime in Wareham.

"We are fortunate to live in one of the most beautiful communities in Massachusetts," Eckstrom said. "This is an opportunity for all of us to get involved, support each other, show respect for one another, and help realize the potential of Wareham."

Herren graduated from Durfee High School in Fall River. He was a 1999 NBA second round draft pick and played for the Denver Nuggets and the Boston Celtics.  Herren struggled with substance abuse for much of his basketball career.  Now drug and alcohol-free, he is focusing on putting his sobriety and family above all else.  His basketball development company, Hoop Dreams with Chris Herren, Inc., trains basketball prospects throughout New England.  Off the court, he is committed to sharing his story in the hopes of making a difference in the lives of others.
