Former Town Clerk does not support making position appointed

Former Town Clerk Mary Ann Silva came before the Board of Selectmen on Tuesday night to clarify that she does not support making the position of Town Clerk appointed rather than elected.

At the Jan. 14 Selectmen’s meeting, representatives of the Charter Review Committee presented some of the changes they are proposing to the town’s charter, which delineates the structure of the town’s government. One of the committee’s recommendations was to make the Town Clerk an appointed, rather than elected, position. Charter Review Committee Chair Judith Whiteside told Selectmen that the committee, including Silva, voted unanimously in favor of the change.

“I just wanted to clarify -- because my name was mentioned -- that my position has been, and will always be, I do not support the position being appointed, but remaining elected,” Silva said.
