Former Vikings basketball star Darien Fernandez commits to Div. I university
Former Wareham basketball star Darien Fernandez has committed to playing Division I basketball next year at Jacksonville University.
A 2013 graduate of Wareham High School, Fernandez is currently in his second year at Laramie County Community College in Wyoming. Fernandez is averaging 16 points and three steals per game this season with Laramie.
Wareham Week first learned of Fernandez's commitment from Wareham boys basketball coach Kevin Brogioli.
"I texted him the other day telling him how proud I was of him," said Brogioli, who coached Fernandez for four years. "Darien and my son were teammates and are friends so I see Darien in the summer and I follow his progress."
Not only Fernandez is a member of the 1,000 point club, but he is also the all-time single season and career scorer in Wareham basketball history, as well as the all-time leading scorer in football. Fernandez was part of the Wareham basketball 2010 state championship team as a freshman and led the Vikings to the Division III South Sectional final his senior year in basketball.
"As a player, he was the toughest competitor I ever coached. He was strong, relentless, and loved to win," Brogioli said.
Fernandez is the first Wareham basketball player to play at the Division I level in at least the last 40 years, according to Brogioli.
Fernandez will have two more years of eligibility at Jacksonville University, a member of the Atlantic Sun Conference.
