Former Wareham resident shot and killed in Bourne

Apr 15, 2014

A man found murdered in Bourne after an apparent heroin transaction Monday night appears to have been a former Wareham resident.

Cape and Islands District Attorney Michael O'Keefe said that Antone Gutierrez, 22, resided at a motel in Bourne at the time of the murder.  Initial reports about a permanent or former address differed, but the name and age coincide with a previous story in Wareham Week that had Gutierrez listed as residing at 36 Swifts Beach Road at The Woods at Wareham apartment complex.

On Tuesday, O'Keefe's office and the Bourne Police Department put out a joint press release saying they had arrested Sonny J. Tavares, 26, of Buzzards Bay on charges of murder, aggravated assault and battery, unlawful possession of a firearm, and discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a dwelling.

The report also said that others were also present during the alleged transaction/murder, though no names have been released and no additional arrests have been made.

According to the first of two press releases from the district attorney, Gutierrez was found lying in the street at around 9:40 p.m. near Cape Side Convenience Store by a passing motorist, who then placed a 911 call to authorities.

He was pronounced dead at 12:42 a.m. after being transported to Boston Medical Center.  He was the victim of one gunshot wound and one stab wound, according to the press release.

Bourne Police and Massachusetts State Police said they would continue to work on the case.
